“Fail to plan, Plan to Fail”

The good news is It’s easier than it has ever been before, Mobile, desktop and laptop devices can all be backed up from one dashboard. In 2022 we have so many backup options that literally any user can create an effective backup solution, kinda. While there are many easy “one click solutions” out there to protect you from the unthinkable, there are several major steps that too often don’t happen.

Verifying that your backup has indeed backed up

Sure it says “Success! backup complete!” you rewarded yourself with the 3rd espresso of the day and crossed this off your list of things to do. But there is still much to be done. Verifying not only that the backup of your files completed but also that ALL the files you want to keep forever were included in the backup. It is imperative that you verify at least initially when performing incremental backups.

Performing a test restore

The same way your money is safe in the bank but when you need to make a withdrawal do you know the steps involved to get to your most needed resource in a time of need? Getting the data you backed up back on the machine it belongs to is just as important as making the backup in the first place.

Settings just slightly mis-configured

The most common issue with Backups and Data Retention is settings just slightly mis-configured. One of those little check boxes can be the difference between an annoying hiccough that costs you an hour or two of downtime or a memorable event that brought your processes to a grinding halt and affected your customer retention.

Local VS Cloud – BOTH!

If a little is good then a lot is better. Cloud storage has gotten so cheap that local backups almost don’t make sense. That said physical storage has also gotten very cheap. If your business is at risk of being de-platformed (content creators and firearm related businesses I’m looking at you) its never been more important to have the keys to your own castle. Its too cheap to not have all your bases covered.

When in doubt – Sub it out

If you don’t have a backup solution in place yet or just want to make sure what you currently have is sufficient and operational, Give me a call. I will provide you with a basic assessment for free. If your backup plan isn’t up to snuff, I will discuss your options in simple terms and offer size appropriate solutions that scale with you as you grow, eliminating buying twice..
